10 Things You Can Do For Mental Health
Try some or all of these 10 tips to help find the right balance in your life during uncertain times. If you are receiving treatment for a mental illness, these tips can help you manage your disorder and support your treatment and recovery.
- VALUE YOURSELF. Treat yourself with kindness and respect, and avoid self-criticism. Make time for your hobbies and favorite projects, or broaden your horizons by learning something new.
- TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY. Taking care of yourself physically can improve your mental health. Be sure to eat nutritious meals, avoid drugs and alcohol, drink plenty of water, and get enough sleep and exercise.
- SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GOOD PEOPLE. People with strong connections are generally healthier than those who lack a support network. Make plans with supportive friends and family members, or seek out activities where you can meet new people.
- GIVE OF YOURSELF. Volunteer your time and energy to help someone. You will feel good doing something tangible and it is a great way to meet new people.
- LEARN HOW TO DEAL WITH STRESS. Like it or not, stress is part of life. Practice good coping skills and try to see the humor in life.
- QUIET YOUR MIND. Try meditation or relaxation techniques to improve your outlook.
- SET REALISTIC GOALS. Decide what you want to achieve professionally or personally, and write down the steps you need to take to realize your goals. You will enjoy a tremendous sense of accomplishment and self-worth as you make progress.
- BREAK UP THE MONOTONY. Alter your routine, plan a road trip, or take a walk someplace you’ve never been before.
- AVOID DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. Instead of self-medicating the symptoms of your mental illness, seek proper treatment and medication.
- GET HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT. Seeking help is a sign of strength – not a weakness. People who get appropriate care can recover from mental illness and lead full, productive lives.
